What is Basement Conversion?

An abundance of housing and buildings currently hold cellars which used to store coal and wood for heating purposes. Naturally, however, in today’s day and age, these cellars stand neglected and with poor use. Nonetheless, more recently these cellars have become a premium in cities and suburbs, meaning these spaces are once again coming into their own.

A basement conversion is the process of changing this space into a habitable room. Converting an old basement into a modern-day living space is the ideal answer for increasing the size of your home or business property. Thеrе are vаrуіng degrees of basement conversions, from a basic соnvеrѕіоn tо one thаt іnvоlvеѕ еxсаvаtіоn аnd еxраnѕіоn in order to сrеаtе sufficient hеіght tо bе hаbіtаblе.

A basement conversion is the perfect opportunity to build a basement with ideal lighting, an endeavour which more often than not is quite hard to achieve on a regular basement. Through the use of both natural and artificial lighting, you can not only maximise the value of your basement but can also turn it into a high-quality and luxurious living environment. Light wells are an extremely effective way to incorporate natural lighting into your underground living space, an aspect which can be easily planned and implemented in your retrofit basement. In the same vein, many retrofit basements are built to include an outside staircase leading to the surface of your property which allows independent access to the basement. This is especially useful when planning to build a basement to serve as a studio room or separate flat.

How is a Basement Conversion Conducted?

A basement conversion is a specialised job which can only be undertaken by construction engineers with the relevant skills and experience. The structural integrity of the building above the basement is preserved and often even strengthened by the underpinning and technical systems we employ.

As professionals we have a workforce with diverse skills to handle every stage of your basement conversion, from planning to implementation and through to the final finishing phases.

Benefits of a Basement Conversion

A key benefit of basement conversions is how you can extend your existing basement or cellar to add on as many extra rooms as you desire, and your budget allows. Many homes and commercial buildings in London which can be seen from above ground are in fact, nowadays, just the tip of an iceberg! Multiple storeys descend into the ground, under the footprint of the building itself and often extend under the grounds of the property, without impacting the outdoor space.

Basement Conversion Cost

Basement conversion costs depend on many factors including the specification of the fitout and the amount of structural work that is required, i.e underpinning being required or not. Typical basement conversions costs would be between £1500 – £5000 m2

How long does it take?

A basement conversion will vary in the length of time it will take purely dependent on the amount of work required. If underpinning is required to increase the head height this will increase the time frame by maybe 50%. But a typical standard 40 m2 basement conversion would take between 6-8 weeks.
